Driving back home, I told Dave that I had to not think about what went wrong in Mont Tremblant but, instead, I needed to focus on my take-aways. What are the positives that came out of it?
A. Dave and I got away for the weekend – no kids, no dogs, just the two of us. It also happened to be our anniversary weekend, making the time together extra special.

B. My training leading up to the race was solid. There is absolutely nothing that I coud have done or changed on the morning of the race to prevent hypothermia. The day was an experience that was out of my control, not a lesson.
C. I swam 1300 metres in 62F water before I had to stop. That is the furthest that I have swam in cold water ever! I have to be proud of being able to swim as far as I did.
D. I tapered before the race, a real taper. This is something that I typically have trouble doing but I was determined to cut back in all distances and really focus on nutrition in the days leading up to the race. I was rested and I ate well. I felt strong and, contrary to one of my irrational fears, I didn’t lose fitness. This was a huge win for me.
The Mont Tremblant Half-Ironman is behind me. I am moving forward, setting goals and chasing dreams. I am still here.
